The 2026 FIFA World Cup was one of the sporting events of the century, and it came with many memories that will last a lifetime. From being the largest men’s tournament ever to Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments, the 2026 global tournament cemented its place as one of football’s most memorable events.

Over in Ontario, the World Cup didn’t fall short of generating record-breaking activity. Most prominent was a new all-time monthly mark in total cash wagers and the number of active player accounts in July.

According to the latest performance metrics released by iGaming Ontario (iGO), total cash wagers in July amounted to $9.88 billion. That is a 31% year-over-year increase compared to July 2025 and almost $300 million over the previous record of $9.59 billion set in March. The number of active player accounts was also the highest it has ever been in Ontario at close to 1.40 million — 44% more than the 948,000 active iGaming player accounts in July 2025.

Online Casino Activity Hits a New Record

Slots, table games, live dealer options, and peer-to-peer bingo have always been king in Ontario iGaming, and July 2026 was no different.

Despite overall gambling numbers rising during the World Cup, casino games continued to dominate the market, accounting for 89% of iGaming revenue. Online casino wagers increased 30% year-over-year, reaching $8.78 billion in total cash wagers. Meanwhile, casino non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR) rose 4% month-on-month to a record $330.4 million — the third time casino revenue has hit a new all-time high in 2026.

Sports Betting Drops Below June’s $1 Billion Record

In June 2026, sports betting in Ontario drew around $1.03 billion in total cash wagers as bettors embraced the World Cup hype. With Canada one of the three host countries and the men’s national team reaching the round of 16 before losing to Morocco, it was only natural that the excitement spilled over into Ontario sports betting.

In July 2026, however, iGaming Ontario revealed that sports betting reached $992 million in total cash wagers — a 4% drop from the previous month and accounting for 10% of the province’s iGaming revenue. Sports betting NAGGR came in at $77.8 million, a 1% drop from the previous month but still a 47% increase from July 2025.

Ontario’s NAGGR Rises 3% From June

Ontario’s iGaming market continued to gain momentum in July, with NAGGR climbing 3% from June to reach a new monthly high of $330.4 million. While operators narrowly missed the all-time GGR record, their non-adjusted gross gaming revenue still reached an impressive $413.6 million.

That made July the second-highest month on record, trailing only December’s $426 million. It also marked the fourth consecutive month in which Ontario’s iGaming GGR topped $400 million, highlighting just how strong the market has been throughout 2026. With Ontario applying a 20% tax on operator revenue, July generated roughly $83 million in tax revenue, bringing the province’s total iGaming tax haul for the first seven months of 2026 to around $553 million.

More Operators Making Their Way to Ontario

The latest iGaming Ontario figures show why the province remains an attractive destination for operators and suppliers. July was a month of records, but the bigger story is what those numbers say about the strength and maturity of Ontario’s regulated market.

Since opening its doors to private-sector iGaming in 2022, Ontario has developed into one of the most competitive regulated markets in North America. For operators, that means an established audience familiar with online gambling, a functioning regulatory framework, and a market large enough to support serious competition.

That appeal has not gone unnoticed. More operators and suppliers continue to explore opportunities in the province — the latest being Hard Rock Bet on July 22, Betsson’s Casino Days at the start of August, and Fanatics Casino, which debuted on September 1. Success here is about more than immediate market share; it is about gaining valuable experience operating within a mature North American regulatory environment. With July demonstrating just how active the market can be, Ontario looks set to remain firmly on the radar of iGaming businesses looking for their next opportunity.
