Ontario’s regulated iGaming market in September 2026 displays strong wagering activity and an increasing number of regulated websites – as well as renewed attention to responsible gambling and player protection. Recent developments include the expansion of the number of regulated operators, the launch of BetGuard, and warnings about fraudulent gambling-related websites and advertising.

Each of these developments is important for Ontario players since they affect where they can legally play, how operators communicate with customers, and what tools are available to help manage gambling activity.

Ontario iGaming Market Continues to Grow

The scale of the Ontario online gambling market remains one of the most significant trends to watch. To put this into perspective, the latest published monthly figures from iGaming Ontario reveal that players wagered $9.88 billion in July 2026 – the highest total for any month since the opening of the regulated market in April 2022. That figure was 31% higher compared to that of July 2025. Having said that, operators reported $413.6 million in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR) within the month.

June was also a strong month. Players placed nearly $9.46 billion in cash wagers – while operators generated $400.6 million in NAGGR. These Figures represent year-over-year increases of 30.3% and 30.6%, respectively.

Online casino gambling accounts for most of the activity. Casino wagers hit $8.30 billion in June – around 88% of total cash wagers – while casino revenue hit $316.8 million. Sports betting brought in $78.6 million in revenue from approximately $1.03 billion in wagers. Such figures help explain why competition among online gambling operators in Ontario remains intense.

More Regulated Operators Give Players More Choice

Another important September trend is the size of Ontario’s regulated operator market. As of September 1, 2026, iGaming Ontario’s directory lists 49 operators and 84 gaming websites. More notably, these sites cover online casino gambling, sports betting, poker, and other permitted products.

The growing market appears to have brought new brands into the province. A good example is Fanatics Casino, which is listed among the regulated gaming websites in Ontario. That said, other notable brands are DAZN Bet and  Hard Rock, which are also part of the current market.

With so many gaming websites available now, there are even more platforms on which to compare offerings.  However, players should not assume that every gambling site accessible from Ontario is also regulated.

iGaming Ontario recommends its regulated-site directory as the place where players should check  whether an operator is licensed. Regulated operators should meet requirements covering areas such as

  • Game integrity
  • Fairness,
  • Player protection
  • Responsible gambling

Responsible Gambling Becomes a Bigger Focus

Responsible gambling is another of the major themes of the Ontario iGaming industry during September.

In May 2026, iGaming Ontario launched BetGuard – a province-wide tool that allowed individuals to opt out of regulated online gambling across participating sites through one process.

This was seen as giving players another option in the case  they wish to take a complete break from regulated online gambling instead of managing limits separately on individual accounts.

The need for accessible player-protection tools has also become more visible as Ontario’s market expands. As of June 2026, the number of active player accounts had exceeded 1.3 million – according to the latest published monthly figures. However, one thing is worth noting: the number of active accounts does not represent the number of unique players. This is because one player might hold a number of accounts with multiple operators.

Fraudulent Gambling Advertising Is a New Player Concern

One of the more recent issues is the emergence of deceptive gambling-related content under the guise of legitimate brands and responsible-gambling initiatives. On September 10, 2026, the iGaming Ontario organization warned the public about unauthorized 3rd parties using the BetGuard name and branding.

The organization said that some parties were making misleading statements about how players could opt out of regulated online gambling. For this reason, the organization advised players to rely on official BetGuard, the operator, and iGaming Ontario channels.

This issue goes beyond self-exclusion information. On September 17, the reporting featured an account of an offshore and unlicensed sportsbook employing an AI-generated likeness of Alphonso Davies’ father to attract clicks. For Ontario players, such developments underscore the need to examine the origins of gambling advertisements and avoid any unknown links that offer betting or responsible-gambling services.

What Ontario Players Should Watch Next

The remainder of 2026 is likely to remain important for Ontario online gambling – all parties are adjusting to a more mature and competitive marketplace. The combination of 49 regulated operators, 84 gaming websites, and billions of dollars in monthly wagers shows the size of the market. At the same time, the introduction of BetGuard and warnings around impersonation and fraudulent gambling advertising point to an ongoing issue regarding player protection.

For players, the priorities are essentially straightforward: use regulated gambling sites, check the official iGaming Ontario directory, read the terms of any gambling products, and use responsible-gambling tools when needed.

Even as iGaming industry in Ontario continues to grow, recent events show that the market growth and player protection remain closely connected. As the number of operators increases and gambling activity remains high, regulatory oversight and responsible gambling  will continue to shape the Ontario gambling landscape through the rest of 2026.
