While the regulated online gambling market in Ontario continues to grow, that expansion has brought increased attention to responsible gambling and player protection. With ever more people using online casinos, sports betting sites, and poker platforms, regulators and industry organizations are focusing more on tools to help control gambling.
The scale of the Ontario market helps explain why this issue is becoming more significant. As of September 1, 2026, iGaming Ontario listed 49 regulated operators and 84 gaming websites. Players must be at least 19 years of age and located within Ontario to access this regulated market.
Ontario’s Growing Online Gambling Market
Ontario’s regulated iGaming market has become one of the largest online gambling markets in North America. The number of available websites gives players access to casino games, sports betting, and poker from a range of regulated operators.
Such growth indicates an equally strong need for responsible gambling measures. iGaming Ontario states that regulated operators must adhere to standards on player protection and social responsibility, and websites must include features to prevent underage access and promote safer playing habits. This is especially important given that online gambling is available around the clock — unlike a physical casino, an online betting account can be accessed from home or a mobile device whenever a player wants to place a bet.
The Responsible Gambling Council sees online gambling as featuring fewer natural breaks than other gambling environments. It also highlights risks such as:
- Chasing losses
- Losing track of time
- Spending more than intended
BetGuard Adds Centralized Self-Exclusion
One of the most significant developments in responsible gambling in Ontario in 2026 has been BetGuard, a centralized self-exclusion tool launched by iGaming Ontario in May.
The tool allows anyone 19 years or older to opt out of all regulated online gambling platforms through a single portal. The length of exclusion may be six months, one year, five years, or a custom period. Once enrolled, users cannot access their existing accounts, create new accounts, or receive direct marketing communications from regulated sites.
This is particularly important because players no longer need to contact individual operators to take a break from the regulated online gambling market. iGaming Ontario noted that the government has invested well over $421 million since 2018 into such initiatives, including public education and awareness activities, responsible gambling measures, and research.
Responsible Gambling Rules Apply Across the Market
Responsible gambling is not simply an optional feature for Ontario operators. iGaming Ontario requires operators to achieve and maintain RG Check accreditation through the Responsible Gambling Council. Operators must also undertake responsible gambling and problem-gambling prevention campaigns and take part in BetGuard. These requirements exist alongside the responsible gambling standards of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).
The Responsible Gambling Council currently lists numerous Ontario-based online gambling sites that hold RG Check accreditation, including major brands like FanDuel, BetMGM, DraftKings, BetRivers, PointsBet, and NorthStar Bets. Accreditation periods vary between operators. This framework is designed to give players access to tools and information that help them make informed decisions about their gambling.
Why Player Protection Matters as Competition Increases
The growing number of gambling websites means more choice for Ontarians, but also that responsible gambling measures need to work consistently across a larger market. The latest directory shows 84 gaming websites operated by 49 operators, offering casino, sports betting, poker, and other forms of online gambling. Responsible gambling involves:
- Setting spending and time limits
- Understanding that gambling outcomes are uncertain
- Taking regular breaks
- Avoiding attempts to recover losses by placing additional bets
The Responsible Gambling Council estimates problem-gambling prevalence in Canada is somewhere in the range of 1% to 2%, though it varies between provinces. It also identifies young adults as a group requiring particular attention, with online gambling identified as a strong predictor of gambling problems among young adults.
What Comes Next for Ontario Online Gambling
Responsible gambling is very likely to remain an important part of Ontario’s iGaming strategy as the market matures. The centralized self-exclusion function is among the player-protection initiatives included in the 2026-2029 plan, which focuses on using market data to understand player behaviour and trends.
The key message for consumers is simple: a regulated gambling site is not automatically a guarantee that gambling will remain harmless. Players have to monitor their own time and spending, and use safeguards when needed. As Ontario’s online betting market develops, the success of the province’s responsible gambling approach will depend on whether these tools are easy to access, widely understood, and consistently applied across the expanding regulated market.
